Long story short… Nothing.
Dry needling is a form of acupuncture. In latin, acupuncture simply means needle (“acus”) puncture or prick (“punctura”).
Acupuncture is a broad umbrella term for basically any treatment or intervention that involves inserting needles into the body. This can include what people typically think of as acupuncture, or traditional Chinese medicine. Or the more westernized and scientifically evidence-based intramuscular trigger point dry needling.
“Wet needling” would include hollow needles used for injections.
“Dry needling” is the use of solid monofilament needles without a hole in the middle.

Intramuscular trigger point dry needling has 3 mechanisms:
It reintroduces an inflammatory response to the treatment area. This can help reignite a stalled healing process.
It can reset the muscle’s neuromuscular junction. This helps the muscle relax.
It results in the body releasing our natural “feel good” hormones, endogenous opioids. This helps decrease pain.
